Demystifying Ways to Achieve ESG Goals in China: Stewardship of Market Participants

Pangyue Cheng is a Ph.D. candidate in the faculty of law at the National University of Singapore (NUS). She received her bachelor’s degree from Beijing Normal University (BNU) and master’s degree from the NUS, specializing in Corporate and Financial Services Law. She is currently a member of the Chinese Scholars and Students Association in Singapore and has served as the President of the BNU Sign Language Association and a team member of the Beijing University Moot Court Competition. Her research project intends to investigate the stewardship of institutional investors and listed companies in relation to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, highlighting the stewardship role played by market participants in achieving China’s sustainability ambitions. She aims to develop a legal framework for ESG stewardship that promotes policy innovation designed to foster sustainable development. She holds a research assistant position at the NUS, where she conducts research on AI and financial market legal issues in China and the United States. Prior to commencing her doctoral research, she worked as a lawyer specializing in commercial disputes at a Beijing law firm and as a legal counsel engaged in due diligence at a listed AI company.
