Project Title:
Enlightenment at the End of History: the transformation of critical theory and liberal democracy’s cosmopolitan moment, 1979-2008.

Nathan Low is a PhD candiate in Yale’s History Department. His general scholarly interests are in modern European intellectual history, modern European Jewish history, the history of liberal internationalism, and the history of European political thought since the eighteenth-century. His dissertation is a study of how transatlantic critical theory was transformed by the ambience of “the End of History” in the 1990s. It offers an analysis of the booming discourses of “cosmopolitanism” , “post-nationalism” and how they emerged in relation to the founding of the EU and the new visions of global law that emerged in that decade. At Yale, Nathan has been a co-convener of the Approaches to Recent and Contemporary History working group. Nathan holds MA degrees from Queen Mary University of London and from the University of Edinburgh. As a native of Glasgow, Scotland, he maintains an interest in modern Scottish history, the history of European nationalism, and the intersecting histories of modern European civic politics, liberalism, and social democracy.
