Leviathan’s Sinews: Bureaucracy and Political Control in Southeast Asia

Matthew Koo is a doctoral student at Yale’s Department of Political Science, where he studies comparative politics and international relations. His substantive research interests span authoritarian politics, state building, and bureaucracies. With a regional concentration on Southeast Asia, his dissertation examines British colonial state building and decolonization, and its subsequent effects on the governance of newly independent states. He holds an MA from the University of Chicago, and a joint BA from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and National University of Singapore.
