Mr. Kwan will examine the post-Cold War correlation between the rise of the commercial military industry in the United Kingdom and the proliferation of privatized warfare in sub-Saharan Africa. The United Kingdom serves as the headquarters to some of the world s largest and most well-known private military firms commercial enterprises and corporate entities that specialize in the provision of professional services intricately linked to warfare. Britain is also a principal supplier of contract and private soldiers to conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa, most notably such countries as Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
