Welfare, Disability and State: A Comparative Perspective on the South African Disability Grant

Gabrielle Kelly is a Fox International Fellow (2014/15) from the Centre for Social Science Research at the University of Cape Town, where she is a PhD candidate in Sociology. Through her doctoral research, she is developing a policy ethnography of the South African disability grant, focusing specifically on the role that medical doctors play in shaping access to this state-funded social assistance program. This work builds on her MPhil research, completed at Stellenbosch University, which explored community-level politics around disability grants. She has a strong interest in welfare, health and social justice issues as well as research methodology. Her past experience includes working as a program evaluation consultant in various African countries and as a researcher for a children s rights organization.
