Freie University Berlin, Germany

Freie Universität Berlin is one of Berlin’s three full-scale universities located in the south of the city. Having been awarded “excellence status” in a nation-wide competition in 2006 (renewed in 2012), the University is well known for its research in the fields of the humanities and the social sciences. The University also offers well-established and internationally successful area studies (Europe, Latin America, Asia, North American Studies, Muslim Studies, among others).

The city of Berlin is Germany’s political center featuring interesting political, academic and think tank events on a daily basis – many of them open to the (university) public. But it is also one of the most vibrant cultural hubs in Europe with many museums, concerts, and exhibitions. The city is one of the most multicultural places in Germany. Many of the neighborhoods are home to people from more than 170 different countries and from all over Germany. It offers a place for almost every type of lifestyle – from hipster culture of students and tech start-ups to the “old money” at the lakes in the south of the city. Many neighborhoods offer a huge variety of international food, a whole subculture on vegan and vegetarian markets and restaurants, but also traditional. Berlin pubs with hefty traditional food from the region. The city’s clubs, finally, are famous for some of the finest European electro music. Berlin has two airports in or very close to the city and is only a three hours train-ride away from Hamburg and the Baltic Sea.
