The University of Cambridge is one of the oldest universities in the world, mixing tradition with cutting-edge research. The university is well-known for its collegiate system: there are thirty one colleges in total, with many providing teaching for their undergraduates as well as a home for their graduate students. As a Fox International Fellow, your home will be Sidney Sussex College, which houses a close-knit population of around five-hundred students. Founded in 1596, it is the youngest of the ‘old colleges’ and sits in the center of the town, providing easy access to a range of facilities and amenities: for instance, the Sidgwick site, home to many of the humanities and social science faculties, is a short, beautiful walk away over the River Cam. The college is rumoured to have the best food in Cambridge and also hosts a well-renowned biennial May Ball. Sidney has an active graduate community that frequently hosts formals in the dining hall and arranges dinner ‘swaps’ with other colleges.
Although Sidney is commonly acknowledged to be strong in Law and History, graduate teaching and research is coordinated at the faculty level. Cambridge is strong in all the areas embraced by the Fox International Fellowship. Around half the students study arts and humanities, and the faculties of law and history are particularly well regarded, as are departments in the social sciences, such as political science, geography, and economics. The Judge Business School provides leading education in finance and business studies, and there are many student societies to explore that provide a link to the world outside of the university. London is less than an hour away by train and offers national libraries and archives, as well as world-class galleries, restaurants and theatres. Over forty Fellows have studied at Sidney Sussex College and the University of Cambridge since they became partners of the Fox International Fellowship in 1994.
