Elkanah Oluwapelumi Babatunde

Elkanah Babatunde is a PhD student at the Faculty of Law, University of Cape Town. His research seeks to analyze the legislative process that culminated in the formation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Specifically he is interested in the role played by financial considerations and ideas of historic equity in the acceptance of the Agreement by African states. This research seeks to understand whether African states would have signed and ratified this climate change agreement in the absence of financial and technological transfer from developed countries and whether the agreement creates any obligation for African states in the absence of such transfer. Prior to undertaking his PhD, he earned a Masters in Human Rights Law at the University of Cape Town where his dissertation focused on the legality and legitimacy of humanitarian intervention.  Previously, he has also practiced as a barrister and solicitor in Nigeria.
