Do Macro Social Orders explain Individual Psychiatric Care?: Lessons from Colonial and Post-Colonial Algeria

Paul Marquis is a PhD Candidate in History at Sciences Po Paris, where he also earned his M.A. He is currently a Fox International Fellow at Yale University, working on a research project about the social history of psychiatry in Algeria. His work examines the role of the psychiatric institution within colonial and post-colonial Algerian society. By focusing on daily life within the hospital and interactions among doctors, nurses and patients, he considers how psychiatric care could have offered possibilities to challenge the authority of colonial institutions in Algeria. In addition to his research, Paul has taught Social and Cultural History to undergraduate students at Sciences Po Paris and at the University of Paris XII – Créteil. Paul is also actively involved in volunteer work promoting equal access to education for children, irrespective of their social and family backgrounds. While at Yale, he will further study the impact of colonization and war events on medical theories and practices.
