Project Title:
How Legal Regimes Shape Music Cultures in Contemporary Russia

Libbie Katsev is a graduate of Yale University, where she majored in English with concentrations in journalism and fiction writing. A Russian American, she has focused much of her past study on Russian language and literature, including translating the prose of Marina Tsvetaeva. Her work in Moscow examines the causes and effects of a 2015 law that restricts who can perform in venues of a certain size, as well as exploring the broader relationship between Russian music, the Russian government, and capitalism in Russia.
